روی همه‌ی بسته بندی محصولات، داخل ترکیبات یک سری اعداد با حرف اختصاری E نوشته شده است. این کدها از طرف اتحادیه‌ی اروپا تایید شده‌اند. نماد E از اول کلمه‌ی "EUROPE" گرفته شده است. عددی که کنار حرف E نوشته می‌شود نشان دهنده‌ی ماده‌ای است که در تولید آن محصول به کار رفته است. که گاهی نشان دهنده‌ی افزودنی‌های خوراکی می‌باشد، که می‌تواند مضر باشند و گاهی مانند E300 نشان دهنده‌ی ویتامین C می‌باشد.
